GirlsFilmSchool
2003 presents its Summer Screening Series:
June
15, 7:30 pm - Stranger Inside by Cheryl Dunye
"Cheryl Dunye's deft, intelligent movie follows an inmate,
Treasure Lee (Yolanda Ross in her feature film debut), as she searchs
for Brownie, the convict mother she hasn't seen since birth...Ross
is an amazing camera subject. She has the hard-paked look of a track
sprinter who never wins. [Davenia] McFadden gives a ferocious performance
[as Brownie]...STRANGER INSIDE is a film with impact." The
Hollywood Reporter.
The
SCREEN, $10.00.
June 17, 7:00 pm - "Betty Boop is a Dog / Cartman's Mom
is a Dirty Slut"
In this highly illustrated presentation, video artists Teresa Foley
will introduce basic concepts of visual literacy and elicit audience
responses regarding the characterization and manifestation of women
in animated media. A peculiar but engaging cross-section of mass
media cartoons and independent art house film clips will be screened
as the foundation for a criticial dialogue about animated female
characters.
Tipton Hall, Free.
June 21, 7:30 pm - Eve's Bayou by director Kasi Lemmons -
Filmmaker Present!
"A father's philandering nature is only one of several problems
for a black southern family, but, to 9 year-old Eve, it is the most
immediate. As her suspicions deepen, so does her desire to bring
the infidelity to an end, even if it means calling down justice
on its perpetrator. A stylish, southern Gothic tale of family discord
and coming of age by first-time writer/director Lemmons." -
